Intensive ESL Certification Prep/TESOL/TEFL Course (In Person @ TCU)

Course Description:

There are more people in the world who speak English as an additional language than first-language English speakers, and the demand and need for English proficiency continues to grow. The state of Texas has over one million emergent bilingual youth, making up 20% of all students in Texas classrooms. This course will provide comprehensive knowledge for those wishing to teach English in other countries (TEFL) and for those wishing to successfully serve emergent bilinguals in Texas schools (ESL certification prep).

The course will be 25 hours in total:
Monday, July 15 9am-noon (lunch) 1pm-3pm
Tuesday, July 16 9am-noon (lunch) 1pm-3pm
Wednesday, July 17 9am-noon (lunch) 1pm-3pm
Thursday, July 18 9am-noon (lunch) 1pm-3pm
Friday, July 19 9am-noon (lunch) 1pm-3pm

Participants must attend all sessions to receive the continuing professional education certificate.

ESL Supplemental TExES (154) Training Program

Program Overview:

This courseĀ  was developed beginning in the summer of 2021 by Dr. Steve Przymus and it continually updated to meet teacher needs. It is designed to prepare elementary, middle school, and secondary school educators, working with culturally and linguistically diverse students, to take the TExES 154 for ESL certification, as well as develop the core set of competencies for teaching English language learners. Educators will leave prepared to implement multiple strategies to ensure student success in addition to the knowledge needed to pass the TExES 154.

This course emphasizes the application of theory into effective teaching practice by focusing on English as a Second Language (ESL) methodologies, approaches, and techniques for second language learners as outlined by Texas State Board of Education Text Framework for ESL supplemental certification (EC-12) #154. Domain I: Language Concepts and Language Acquisition; Domain 2: ESL Instruction Assessment; Domain 3: Foundations of ESL education, Cultural Awareness, and Family and Community Involvement.

The course will occur over a period of 4 weeks with 8 live interactive Zoom Video Conferencing sessions, totaling 12 hours, as well as 12 hours of asynchronous activities. Participants must attend all sessions and complete asynchronous activities to receive the full credit of 24 hours of continuing professional education. Please note, partial credit will not be awarded.
