Program Overview:
This course was developed beginning in the summer of 2021 by Dr. Steve Przymus and it continually updated to meet teacher needs. It is designed to prepare elementary, middle school, and secondary school educators, working with culturally and linguistically diverse students, to take the TExES 154 for ESL certification, as well as develop the core set of competencies for teaching English language learners. Educators will leave prepared to implement multiple strategies to ensure student success in addition to the knowledge needed to pass the TExES 154.
This course emphasizes the application of theory into effective teaching practice by focusing on English as a Second Language (ESL) methodologies, approaches, and techniques for second language learners as outlined by Texas State Board of Education Text Framework for ESL supplemental certification (EC-12) #154. Domain I: Language Concepts and Language Acquisition; Domain 2: ESL Instruction Assessment; Domain 3: Foundations of ESL education, Cultural Awareness, and Family and Community Involvement.
The course will occur over a period of 4 weeks with 8 live interactive Zoom Video Conferencing sessions, totaling 12 hours, as well as 12 hours of asynchronous activities. Participants must attend all sessions and complete asynchronous activities to receive the full credit of 24 hours of continuing professional education. Please note, partial credit will not be awarded.
